Cinch down straps as tie straps

A couple of months ago I took my kids on a little camping trip. When we got to the camp site and started setting up our hammocks, I realized the new hammocks did not come with any rope to tie them to the trees.

The hammocks in question are Byer travelers parachute hammocks.

I just happened to have some string in my pack. So I got the string and gave my kids a lesson on braiding rope from string. It was getting close to dark and we did not have enough time to braid another set up ropes.

So we grabbed a couple of flashlights and walked the 100 yards to the truck. We were camping at the end of a old logging road. In the truck I had several tie drop straps, also called cinch down straps. There were a couple of spring buckle types and a couple of ratchet types. I grabbed several of each type and back to the camp site we went. The type of cinch down strap that uses a spring in the buckle worked great, the ratchet type took a little longer to get set up.

So if you are ever in a bind, and need a way to get your hammock set up, keep and extra cinch strap in your pack. These things are cheap and easy to use.

After you read some more threads here, you'll be pleased to learn that many hangers on this site use just that kind of webbing for their hammock suspensions. In fact, there are quite a few modifications and different techniques for using them.
