Regarding ripstop, personally I don't think that's important. I believe ripstop is designed to prevent further tearing in clothing and gear that isn't under much load. That grid probably doesn't provide much help when a hammock is failing.

That said, every hammock I've made has been from ripstop. Simply because it's what they had.
Agreed on the ripstop only being marginally effective, but the other sport nylon Joann's has (at least mine) is more like cordura... Their 1.9 is much more comfortable, I probably should have been more specific... (ack, or is it 1.7... I forget)
