    Question Soft shackle Prusik Question

Ok so I have a could of these soft shackle prusik things and had a question about them....(drum roll)

Why do they have slip knot kind of thing? Why not just two buried loops? Maybe there's a use for the slip capability that I don't know of.

Sorry dumb question but I'm curious and new the hanging world. I figured you guys would have some answers for me.

The way I've seen them used (and the way I'm using them) is to attach your tarp to your tarp ridgeline. I also use a soft shackle prusik to attach my Nite-Ize Figure 9 to my tarp ridgeline. That "slip knot kind of thing" is the soft shackle.

I'm basically using Opie's tarp suspension system on my tarp, as indicated in Opie's video below:

You disconnect the adjustable loop from the stopper knot, and make your prusik knot on the ridgeline. Now you can attach the tarp using the adjustable loop and knot.

You could also use soft shackle prusiks to connect things to your hammock ridgeline as well. Any prusik you make is going to need a knot - my thought is that it may as well be a soft shackle too. More useful than just a prusik.

I take that back - not all prusik knots need a knot, not that my statement made any sense anyway. I meant to say that you could use a regular prusik loop to attach tarp to ridgeline, then just make an overhand knot to secure it. However, the soft shackle prusik allows you to easily open the loop. A regular prusik loop (especially if you properly dressed the knot) would be harder, if not impossible, to open.

Hmm I've tested them out on my newly added Whoopie ASR that I made and I put them on and took them off with out taking the knot out of the loop. I made a different one today that is just a continuous loop (buried loops on each end).

from what I understand you just make 3 or 4 wraps around the line you are putting it on and pull it tight.

The "soft shackle" part of the soft shackle prusik is used to attach something to the loop after you have prusik-ed it to the ridgeline. As you have discovered, it is not used to tie the prusik.

With your continuous loop prusik, you will have to use a mini-biner, etc to attach something to the loop.

Ahhh thanks gmxttr I get it now you can take the loop apart and run it through what you are wanting to hang so you don't need a biner.
