Noobie - Geordie living in UAE

    Hi There,

I found this forum through Natural Bushcraft. Been living and working in UAE for nearly 4 years, and been able to do a reasonable bit of rough camping in the desert and on beaches and in the mountains with the family and the Scouts - I'm an Explorer Scout Leader.

I've always fancied the idea of hammocking and got one towards the end of last year. I tried it for the 1st time on a Scout camp at a beach and it was the best nights sleep I've had outside ever.

I'm keen to get a better understanding and then practise at home the different ways of setting up the hammock to see what I find best and would be very grateful for any advice. I bought a Lifeventure hammock as this was the only supplier I could find out here.

I'm in the process of planning an overnight trip for Explorer Scouts to a desert island - kayaking over - and I'm planning to sleep in it over there. I'm in the process of looking for a mossie net, there are Lifesystems nets out here which seem pretty good - has anyone used them before?

I've set up a couple of wall hooks in my garden to try out difference arrangements, and am keen for any advice / guidance on the easiest way to set-up an fine tune the tension. The hammock comes with extension cords and I bought some heavy duty steel rings, but I'm now reading about whoopies and other things.

One question - and there seems to be two camps - when you set-up is it better to have some sag in your hammock or or not?

    Regards

    SJT

Welcome to HF! The answer to your question on hammock sag will depend greatly on the type of hammock that you have. But as a general rule hammocks need sag in order to be comortable.

Welcome to HF from Bama..............check out the 10 part Video series for Newb Hangers by Shug, in the video section at the top of the page. Also, The Ultimate Hang by Derek Hansen. It is a wonderful book for beginning/experienced hangers that covers all of the aspects of Hammock Camping.

    Dear all,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been watching Shug's videos - top stuff.

I'm in process of making my own mossie net. Once it's ready, and if it's any good I'll maybe post a couple of pics.

    Regards
