UQ with pad or double UQ

Here is my question as I would like to be reasonably comfortable at 0 degrees.

Which would be warmer, a 20 degree UQ with a Thermarest Ridgerest, or a 20 degree UQ with a larger 40 degree UQ around that?

At this point I am not worried about weight, I just want to stay as warm as possible. I appreciate any input on the matter.

I would try the two UQs together first.....be way more comfy for sure. This is a picture of my friend Timmy in two UQs....a full length 20º and a 30ºish 3/4 UQ. Down jacket over the footend. It was minus 1º that night.

If you're using 2 UQ's, just make sure the outer one doesn't squish the inner one. Usually I'll put the larger/longer one on first and the shorter one on the outside. If you can, try experimenting with your gear to find out which set up will work for you. Another thing you can do is to set up with the two UQ's and try it. Bring the thermarest as plan B. Then if you're cold, add it too!!

I'd go with 2 UQ's with the provision that you work without your setup at home first and get the suspensions adjusted. I can't emphasize enough how much better this will go if you have a second person to assist you with the setup.

I've done the pad thing with an underquilt, and it works. I find that a cut-down pad that is only as wide as my body and only covers my core from the underside works to keep me warm. Since it was so narrow and short, I didn't have a problem with pad buckling or surfing it all over the hammock all night. I just tucked it underneath me and fell back asleep.

Note: I tend to be a coffin-style sleeper when in a hammock. I just don't move much.

If you want, here is the post detailing my experience with it.

Are both the UQ's full length? Are you working with (2) 3/4 UQ's ?
I know for sure that that Ridgerest is a great pad, what I like about it
is that it serves dual pruposes. I can sit on it when I'm out of the hammock and have even used it for a windshield when cooking. I cut my 3/4 ridgerest in half I found that I could get by with about 24' of and it still performs well.

I appreciate everyones advice. I will definately experiment a bit this weekend with the two UQ's before I head out next weekend. So if I got it, longer of the quilts goes closer to body and shorter quilt goes outside of that. I also will make sure to not make the second quilt too tight. Oh ya, and maybe bring the pad as a back-up just in case. Thanks again

This would be the perfect example of when I would use my 20 degree HG Incubator with my IX UQ. To me it's the perfect light weight packable combination. As an example, some friends and I went out last week in upstate NY. I gave my friend my IX to use in conjunction with a homemade synthetic UQ while I slept with the Incubator alone. He was toasty and I was not quite. Having said that...I was using a Clark NX 250 and I sometimes have a hard time getting my UQ just right with it. My other friend was using an Incubator alone with a Claytor and reported being toasty. MY point is...the homemade UQ and the IX worked great and made a huge difference. I would put the IX closest to the hammock with the regular UQ to the outside. The IX weighs next to nothing and can be used by me down to about 40 by itself.. Coincidentally it's a perfect fit with the Clark NX 250.
