Never Been, Want to Go: Linville Gorge

I'm looking to try out the Gorge for my first time in the spring (maybe March). As I've never been I'd be wanting something with ample water sources and a trail/ series of trails that form a loop back to my car.

I love high intensity and I'm not afriad of working for my dinner. On "normal trails" I enjoy 15-20 miles a day. I know to expect less in the Gorge.

Someone who has been to the Gorge before and knows me recommended the "Is that all you've got" loop, from what he has heard of that loop (never having been on that one his self).

I'm having a hard time decifering the National Geographic Trail map. As I know this is a wilderness area, I'm not surprised. I'm pretty good with a map and compass, but knowing what is best...I'm looking for help.

Anyone who helps me plan the trip is welcome to come along for the hang. Thanks for everyone's help.

There will be a big Rat Hang in May if you wanna wait for spring thaw. Check out www.linvillegorge.net for the best maps. Expect a LOOOOOOT less miles than what you're use too!

The Nat Geo map is pretty useless for trails and detail in the gorge ... better off with the USFS map for a published trail map.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

I missed the May Gorge Hang.. it broke me off in November, I'm looking for revenge

I think I might try to make this hang, probably be a +1 and get my brother from Lajune to come out too, I know he'd like another crack at it too.

Starting Feb, I'm working double shifts for 2/3 weeks straight then 2/3 a week for 3 months (2pm-6am, bleh, that's between my normal shifts.. 24 hours of OT a week though).. I'll be done with these just in time for the hang if all goes according to plan.

Anyone else down for hiking up the cabin trail?

I second going in May for the big gorge hang.

I am going to head on down to the gorge this year to go and can't wait to finally see some friends in person.

May could be good. I'll be looking for information on the May Hang. I too would love to meet some of you in person. Perhaps I'll drop in at the other forums for some maps.
