I've discussed this on gorge forums but I'll mention it hear as it could be used anywhere.
Use Mobile Atlas Creator to create an image of the area you're interested in with a source of something like terraserver or google terrain and the overlay the image into Google Earth so you get a topo map with relief. Add in GPS tracks such as the Linville Master and you get a pretty awesome tool for checking out the gorge or elsewhere.
