Down Pillows/ Comforter as a supply source

So, I'm getting ready to jump into my first quilt project, and while I'd love to be able to just purchase a pound of 900 fill power down, it's not in the budget.

However, I'm thinking of using an alternative source...Amazon.

    750 Fill Power Comforter
    750 Fill Power Pillow

Now, granted, it's "only" 750 Fill Power, but I was looking through the reviews for people reporting feathers poking through, "crunching" sounds, etc. It looks like these use pretty high quality down. I'll only need about 16oz for my planned quilt at 750FP, so I'm looking at getting just the pillow for now.

I need 10,600 ci. of down, no matter the FP. I'm making a winter, full length UQ.

28oz. of 750FP down for $65. That's $2.30/oz, or, in terms of volume, $0.31 per 100ci. What is everyone's thought? Can I find it cheaper elsewhere?

I plan on using this method to source my down as well. Sounds like a sure winner.
Keep an eye on Ebay and Overstock.com I've heard of folks finding deals down to $.30/Oz.

if you look on ebay, search for "bloomingdales my luxe" pillows, they are advertised at 800fp and this is what i used, although i am certainly no expert on down, the ones i got sure seemed like they were 800fp or very close to it, the pillows were all down and no feather at all

but i suppose there are ones on there that are better or worse than others, just need to do a bit of homework and make sure the ones your bidding on are quality

Over the summer, my wife had stored our down comforter in a storage closet too close to the light. Needless to say, it caught fire a burned a hole in it. Lucky we were home to realize what was happening when we saw the smoke and lucky for me to come across a large surplus of down. I can't really say of the fill rating, but there were mostly snow-flake-like feathers flaoting all over, in addition to some spiney feathers, too.

I had an old camp pillow that is flannel/nylon and weighs about 10 oz. I cut it in half and created a hybrid pillow with about 30 grams of poly fill and about 1.5 oz of the down. I made two, the second one with less poly fill and more down. They came out at 2.4 oz and 3.0 oz respectively. They are half the weight for both and compress to half the size, as well.

So what are you going to do with the other 12 oz of down? Booties? Hat? Let us know how it works out!

I was considering making booties, but making a hat is a great idea.

    Thanks

May want to check smartbargains.com as well. This is where I found the best deal on a down pillow I used for my first project a couple years back.

I went with a cheap 550 fill down pillow to stuff my quilt that came to $.90/oz shipped. Doesn’t pack as small as better down would, but it has kept me warm...

I found two 16 ounce down pillows at K-Mart on a Black Friday sale for $20 each. It doesn't say the fill number. When I opened it up, there were no feathers and it seems to compress well. I thought if nothing else I can overstuff quilts and use them for summer. At that price I won't be out much if it fails.

Nice find. I used the same logic for some Down I salvaged from Starvation Army.
