    suspension straps

Has anyone here ever used the outdoor product's lashing straps from walmart for their tree straps? I have some 6' ones that I am thinking of using but am unsure of how strong they are. I know they are polyester but have no idea if all polyester webbing is made equal.

All polyester is not made equal.

If you give it a try have a camera rolling, you might be able to get on AFV.

yeah I was unsure and thought I had seen someone mention using them, but was unsure. If I was going to try it I would test it with weights before I tried suspending myself.

Good point, what would be the best way to proof a strap?

Personally my thoughts would be to use straps that are proved by laboratory testing to the point of destruction, have survived a 6 month weather test, and are in use by thousands of hammock hangers world wide....but I might have a slight bias.

Sandbags, probably. It's what we used waaay back in high school in JROTC to simulate a casualty on a stretcher (note: trusting your average teenager to not drop a 150+ lb person is not a good gamble) when we did relay runs. They don't have sharp edges, cost next to nothing, and are much less likely to break your instep or toes if dropped than a steel weight.

    @ the OP:

I'm not sure I'd trust those, myself. OP's products are usually fairly decent quality, but I don't know if they're up to life-bearing situations.

You'll get no argument from me on that. Tried and tested is usually worth a few bucks..

Check the package for a rating. They may still be on the shelf in WM or wherever you got them. Just go by and look at the package for a new set.

I went with the 1-1/2" wide strap from "strapworks.com". They had it on clearance for something like $.12/ft (CHEAP). It was rated for 900lbs so I figure I'm OK. It was cheap enough that if it starts to get chewed up at all I'll just toss them and make another pair. I needed some really long ones for some of the trees around here anyway. You can either stitch them or just just tie loops in the end. Simple as can be......

That is kinda what I was leaning towards, if no one else was already using them. It was one of those "I already have this, so I wouldn't have to go to the store..." questions. Its only a few bucks, if that, to get some rated ones, so that's probably what I will do.

    Thanks everyone.
