Toggles - do they have to have a high weight limit?

Pretty much what the title says. If using toggles and a MSH to attach a hammock to webbing, does it matter what the toggle is? I've been using whoopieslings.com's aluminum toggles on my one hammock and they don't seem like they'd be all that weight-bearing. I'm making another hammock as a gift and was trying to figure out what I could use as a toggle (didn't think about it until now and no time to order anything online).

I think I've heard of people using just sticks or pens or other flimsy objects - can it just be anything cylindrical?

I just use trail sticks (a stick layin around) about the size of my thumb. I try to snap it in half to see if it's too dry/dead other than that its hanging in the knot and not the toggle anyways. I used carabiners for a long time but have just recently been able to mentally let go of it.

When I used whoopie slings, I used plastic coat hangers cut to length with ends sanded smooth.

The toggle has to withstand the compression forces of the hitch rather than the force of being broken in half (sorry, not all that technical). So, the toggle just has to be hearty enough to not be crushed (as demonstrated by the fact that I used plastic coat hanger material - very easy to break in half, but trying to crush it is much more difficult).

The toggle forms the knot. The weight is on the knot. A structural engineer can explain the physics.

As the Shugster says: "place the whoopie on the knot, not the toggle".

I've never had any issues using cut down aluminum arrow shafts.

Golf Ts failed on me once. Other than that, any stick or aluminum arrow shaft has worked for me, though I have heard of CF arrows crushing at random times.

I had that happen to me at the Fall Gorge Rat Infestation last year. No big deal, I just switched to aluminum. However, I gotta say that I'm totally hooked on Dutch Buckles now.

hardware like Ace sells wooden dowels. i picked up 4 of them in about 5/16" x 3" for a buck. the ridges on the dowels also helps keep them in place (locked in the webbing loop) while you adjust the whoopie.

Can't be flimsy, no. Due to the geometry and physics of the angles and dynamic forces, the force on the rigging actually can be greater than the weight in the hammock.

Having said that, I generally use two Easton Nano (photo below) hollow round aluminum tent stakes (thus, having a multipurpose piece of gear). But on occasion I have forgotten to pack those and I use any solid stick I can find, about the diameter of my thumb.

And here I thought I had the ultimate coup. Yesterday I was at my local ****'s and the guy at the gun counter hooked me up with a dozen 3" pieces of CF arrow he cut for me from an unusable arrow. Guess, I have to go back for aluminum.
