    Two Hammocks, one tarp

    Hi everyone -

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm wondering if there are any tips, tricks, photos, and advice that you all might have on setting up two hammocks under one tarp.

Generally, there's no shortage of trees where I camp, but I'm thinking, a three tree setup is going to be the easiest.

Would a 10x12 tarp be big enough ? (10 foot ridgeline)

Is this a bad idea ? (in other words, bring two tarps)

    Peace,
    David

In my experience, it's not ideal, but certainly possible. Just be really comfortable with the person you share with cause you're gonna be close. This is usually how I hang with my wife, because she just isn't comfortable with being very far from me while in the hammock (I'm just glad I can at least convince her to be in her own hammock, sharing one hammock, now that's something I couldn't do.) Usually, I look for a place where I can attach both hammocks to one tree on one end, usually the foot end, and to two different trees on the head ends. Of course, these trees need to be within a couple of feet or so of each other, although one can be slightly farther away (and usually is), you would just hang your suspension higher on that one.

Occasionally, I can find three trees very close to one another, or maybe an oak or something that splits into separate trunks, and can hang the tarp from a middle tree/trunk, a hammock from a tree/trunk on either side, and then all three to the same tree on the foot ends. This is one of the best set ups I've ever had for this style camping, but you've gotta be pretty darn lucky to find it sometimes.

One last tip, would be to make sure you both lie on parallel diagonals. Like this // or this \\ not this /\ or this\/ to keep the bumping to a minimum.

I hope this helps, I'm not really artistically inclined enough to diagram it out.

this is a 10x11 cuben tarp in porch mode. when i go out w/ the better half, we always use a one-tarp setup.

Unfortunately I don't have the pics readily available, however, my son and I used a two tree method where I set his hammock up above mine. So, the tarp size didn't matter in our case because we didn't take up any more space than normal. This would be different, I suppose, if there you were expecting winds or such but we weren't.

Things were a little tight, my hammock was only a few inches off the ground while I was inside and his was only a foot or so from me when he was inside ( this came in handy later when things went bump in the night, I was able to just reach up and touch him for reassurance).

Also, I had to help him get inside as he was a short 9 year old.

If you think you'll do a lot of doubling up under one tarp, consider investing in a tarp with side tieouts, like the warbonnet big mamajamba or superfly, or add them to an OES tarp. Makes a HUGE difference.

    wow.. that pic is HUGE!
this is just one pitch, i can also do it standard A-frame if the side panels are pulled out (for foul weather)

I made one for me and others called the HMsuite. Plenty of room for 2 hammocks.

My son and I pitched both our hammocks from the same tree under a 8' x 10' tarp during a backpacking trip over Labor Day weekend. Trunk diameter, maybe 10". Used my treking poles to separate the hammocks at either end. 10' ridgeline.
