    Question UQ Planning Questions

Well, I've got my WBBB and SF, which I haven't even had time to set up yet, buy I'm already planning the next step. It's underquilt time. I'm planning on making a winter UQ first, as that is the type of camping I will be doing most. I live in MN and I've camped on the ground in -20* so I'm planning to do the same in a hammock.
Here is my sleeping bag that I will be using as a topquilt:

My thought was to use this bag as an UQ:

There is a method to my madness. I know that both of these bags are huge and bulky, but that doesn't matter too much for winter camping as I pull a pulk. I am planning to do some winter bikepacking as well, where bulk may play a bigger role. The main reason I am considering a modified Callisto bag is that my wife and I have a $100 REI gift card coming, which would pay for this bag. I know that I'll just want down eventually, so is this bag worth considering?

    Other questions:

Is there a step-by-step guide for down UQ's?

If I choose to make my own quilt, where do I buy down (or primaloft) from?

Has anyone else been successful with a modified sleeping bag UQ in sub zero temps?

Thank you all in advance for any help. I've tried to search the forums, but there are some things that I just can't find answers to.

I was looking at the Callisto just a couple of weeks ago, as a possible UQ. It does weigh a bit, which means heavy duty shock cord or whatever to hold it against the bottom of the hammock. The other, bigger, challenge is the width. The Callisto I looked at was 34" wide. That is a bit narrow for my hammock. If it is used unzipped, it is 68" wide, which is too much. I was planning to use it unzipped, then bunch it up or do a partial overlap to fit the hammock bottom. Don't know what to recommend to keep it against the hammock though. I actually thought of loosely stitching it (by hand) to the hammock.

i'm sure you could have the bag sort of wrap up and around your hammock, like a toasty taco UQ. And yes, that is the scientific term, 'toasty taco.' when the bag is unzipped, at 64”, it should be enough to come up the sides some. Shug has a neat little trick with mitten clips and his ridgeline to help hold the uq up to the bottom of the hammock and keep it from saggin too much. I saw somewhere, maybe youtube, where someone took a zero degree bag, and basicly cut a hole in the bottom and slid it over the hammock. Made a floating buritto of sorts. That would work if you sleep straight but alot of people tend to lay diaganal and i'm not sure how well that'll work. Mmm tacos, burittos...maybe i should eat some breakfast

I didn't think of the weight being an issue. On the thought of the burrito, I had originally tried my mummy bag as a burrito, but that didn't work too well. I lay diagonally in my BB so it didn't line up well.

Grip Clips will be a good starting point IMHO.

Clip 4 to each corner of the bag and see how it looks.

You will have the issue of the head and foot ends (short ends of the sleeping bag) sag down and let cold air in.

The way to get around this would be to sew a channel in both those ends and thread shock cord to cinch those ends up to prevent cold air from rushing in.

The more I look at this idea the more I think I'll just wait for a down UQ. I do really like those Grip Clips though, and I might use them for something else.
