I'm not sure that it matters if the baffles are sewn at the end. I really can't picture much down shifting through the tiny end gaps. I wouldn't worry about the slight loss of insulation on the edges if this is a summer or 3 season quilt.

You will have to look at a chart and then do some math or use a fill calculator. Here is the generally agreed upon loft vs temperature curve. It's obviously varies if your a warm or cold sleeper. Once you know what your loft is, you need to take and calculate the volume of your quilt in cu. in. and divide that by the fill power of your down to determine how much you need. The fill power equals how many cu. in. one ounce of down will fill. Cheater calculator here.

Thanks to this amazing forum, I was able to take on my first sewing project and build a DIY top quilt. Yes, it was the first time I sewed and yes, I know it was a ridiculous first project. It was a lot of work to say the least, but it turned out great and I am very happy with it. Let me know what you guys think!

I'm curious what width should I make the footbox with a 13 size shoe?

I am 6'1" ~170lbs size 13 shoe, and I live in southern NM. The coldest I'll find myself camping is in the 20's (F)

I don't want it to fit like a body glove, but I also don't want to lug a ton of unnecessary material and weight.

What do you all think about these planned final dimension considering the above?

    78" long
    50" Head Width
48" Foot Width (I'll be sewing the foot-box unless someone has a really good reason not to.)

    Thanks

Down TOP quilt, directions and pics

Some advice from my recent project: there is no need to taper the quilt. It doesn't save you hardly any weight at all, plus with your foot size, you will need the extra room. It's so much more work to make all the calculations for material, baffles, and worst off all, down when adding a taper to the quilt. It will go much smoother and faster if you don't taper it, in my opinion.

As far as sewing the foot box or not; I didn't sew mine and it's worked fine, but I can definitely see the benefits of sewing it closed. However, I do like that I can snap up or un-snap for if I want more or less flexibility. I'm also adding snaps to my foot pad so my quilt will just snap onto it to keep it from moving around at night.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!!

Thanks, Izraelius! I really like the idea of making this project as easy as possible along with getting plenty of foot room.

My mother-in-law let me borrow a roller blade and a huge cutting board, so hopefully with all this great advice and gear, I'll be able to produce a top notch quilt.

I didn't mean to highjack this thread. I'll start a new one once all the material and thread arrives. I'm going to put an additional round quilted piece at the bottom to help make that foot-box nice and roomy.

Sunkmail, that was so helpful! Your quilt looks great, and the plug is exactly what I had in mind.

Thanks for the link. It shall be reference often while I have the thread injector running.
