    Question about ridgeline

If I want to use my bottom entry Explorer Deluxe Asym as a sleep on, not in, can I cut my ridgeline and then use a small biner to reconnect it when I wanna use it. I've had my hammock for a coupla months but have only been able to use it once.

    Thanks

I think that if you tried to sleep ON the bugnetting, you'd end up tearing it.

Just a thought, but have you considered DIY'ing or buying a cheap K-mart special (or better yet, a more comfortable ENO DN) type no-net hammock as opposed to running the risk of ruining your Explorer?

I found a green, open hammock at K-mart for 20 bucks. Picked up a couple of whoopie slings in a PIF deal on that thread, and there ya go.

Also, Grand Trunk has had their Ultralight on sale for as low as $12.95. I got two of them. I put Whoopies on them, and now I have a great super light hammock to hike with. Don't mess up your Explorer, you will want to use it with netting and ridgeline later.

Ok, thanks. Reckon I'll sleep in it and leave the ridgeline alone.

I can't suggest that you cut the ridgeline and insert a small carabiner, as it would void the warranty. That said, I do know several Hennessy users who have done just that, cut the ridgeline and inserted a (very strong) carabiner to reconnect the pieces.

To sleep ON their hammocks without the net, they just flip it over and sleep on what was the outside bottom of the hammock. Please realize that without the ridgeline in place, the hammock will not have the famed perfect set curve for comfortable sleeping. You will have to "guess" at how much sag you will need to give your hammock.

Was out camping this week with my Safari Deluxe, and the ridgeline snapped. The worst part is that it actually ripped the net when it went. I will second the statement that without the ridgeline the curve is gone. It really sucked because I had a few things in the hammock with me, that were then up against me all night instead of tucked away in the corner. I ended up switching to a backup because I was afraid I was going to rip the netting further.

Have you thought about contacting HH and asking them what the warranty covers in this kind of circumstance? Just thinking...

It is very rare for a Hennessy rigeline to snap. I had one with a nick of unknown origin which I had replaced before it had a chance to break completely. I used it a bit before having the chance to get it fixed. Did you have it strung tightly? I think that may be the number one cause of failure: Suspension cranked tightly, then a sudden stress, like a bounce as one flips over.

    I'd call Hennessy for advice.

I didn't think it was strung too tight. It had a pretty good sag in it, just enough to keep me off the ground. I have already called them and have an RA and the hammock off to them for a fix. They are going to string it with a stronger line this time and we will see about the netting. It will be on my nickel, but the quote was fine with me.

You do know that Tom usually sets up his hammocks so the (empty) hammock's lines are straight, right? The user needs to give the hammock sag if there is no ridgeline. Hennessy's are made to remove the guesswork of how much sag is needed to make the hammock comfortable.
