If you've never read this book, I highly recommend it. Dumb as it may sound, it changed my life. The book wasn't much of a hit when it was first published, and even went out of print for several years. However, the book has recently become quite popular, forty years after it was published. It's a cult classic.

The book is about a psychologist who begins using dice to make life decisions. It could be as simple as: Even, I have chicken tonight; odd, I have beef. Or you could use all twelve numbers to assign multiple variables, such as 12 different restaurants. You assign the variables, but you must do whatever the dice say. The psychologist eventually begins treating his patients with "dice therapy."

I carried dice with me for 20 years to assist in decision-making. It's actually quite liberating. And you can always play craps to earn some pocket money!

Yes, they obviously based that episode on The Dice Man (though I am blissfully ignorant of what Pokemon dice are). I do like the comment, "The dice giveth and the dice taketh away" which I'm pretty sure is a direct ripoff from the book. There are clearly limitations on allowing the dice to control ALL of one's decisions. I never got to the point where I allowed the dice to dictate when I would relieve myself.

As an English major, I try to quantify for my non-literate friends what good literature is. Often, it has nothing to do with the quality of the prose; rather, is it original? The Dice Man is one of the most original books I have ever read in my life, and I've read a lot of books. As mentioned before, it had an enormous influence on my life.

The same can be said for The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey. I have read that book so many times and I am simply amazed by its originality. Abbey's prose isn't great, but the idea of that book inspired the Earth First movement. It could inspire you to dump a little sand and sugar into the fuel tank of some earth-moving equipment!

English majors...self-anointed keepers of the flame.

I do agree with you about Ed Abbey...we owe him much.

I still like the bare-naked look of this method.

I can't take credit for it. I got it from harrell79cj5 in post #21 in this thread.

The nice thing is that it can be added to a whoopie sling at any time. It's just one of many good ideas buried in the forum that needs to be brought up once in a while for the newer members.
