    This is better than down.

I found a product, shiver shield, online and my first thought was how it could be applied as an under quilt. This is a special type of gel that does a more effective job of retaining body heat and stoping cooler temps from getting through than any other natural or man made material. On their website they only have it for sale as clothing items but maybe instead of needing any other sort of insulation a person could just wear the same clothes they had on. Now that would be weight savings! Downside side is this product is really expensive.

The next link is to a company that makes this jell. The link is for the applications for the product.

Interested on how much it weighs and how well it compresses. If it's really 99% air it should be extremely light right?

Oh, it's just Aerogel. That's been around for a while. Just not cost effective.

When down looks cheap by comparison? Nope. Keeping my down gear, thanks. It has yet to let me... down.

I think this might be interesting material for vegetarians like me though...
I like down... I have a Yeti, but the way they "harvest" it is pretty unsettling IMHO.

some company is now making waterproof down...it gets coated before it goes in the bag or garment..
i'd bet with aerogel it will be non compressible...thin yes but still bulky for a sleeping unit

With down if you have to go to the ground it becomes less useful, thats why
I like pads more than down UQ. hopefully that will never happen but in a lurch with a down UQ you have put yourself a less than beneficial situations. If a product like this ever came to market and was wasn't outlandishly expensive it would give a hammocker the best insulation and less worry about the weather affecting his or her gear.

It should be said that this isn't a product for hammocks so all this is speculative and has no chance yet to make any real arguments for or against any other types of insulation except to get a persons attention as a thread Title.

I'm sure this stuff doesn't compress like down, so down does have that advantage.
