    Mosquito proof hammock material

    Hi Everyone.

I was wondering what is your experience as far as mosquito proof hammock material. I see various commercially sold hammocks in both single and double layer configurations with claims of being mosquito proof, but I wonder, what's the truth in the field?

    Single layer 1.1
    Double 1.1
    Single Layer 1.7/1.9
    Other combos

My guess is that single layers are not likely to be mosquito proof since I've had the blasted critters bite me through jeans and other tough materials.

    Peace,
    David

Your instincts are correct. We don't have many mosquitos here in Western North Carolina (no level ground=no standing water=no mosquitos) but we do have gnats. I've been bitten to death through a single layer hammock AND my clothes. An underquilt (or pad) and attached bug net OR a loose-fitting all-the-way-around bug net is the only complete protection that I'm aware of. Others' experience may vary.

rather than drag even more gear into the wild i'm exploring the use of permethrin- we have lots of insets that like to bother campers here. to my way of thinking once you open the hammoch they want in ..zip in back up and youre sleeping with uninvited guests. with the insect repellent they stay away from everything that's been treated. weight gain..almost nothing! fwiw i own a double layer hammock. in retrospect i should of gotten a single, since in the end i'm going to use the chemical approch. there's a few threads about the use...both pro and con on this site

Thanks Pips. That's what I figured alright. I was planning on using a full, wrap-around bug net, but if there are weights savings to be had... well you know.

Waldo... Hadn't considered permethrin. I've been seeing it crop up on clothes the last couple of years. Perhaps its worth a try. Especially during black fly season.

Check to make sure that permetherin repels black flies, but other checking that I whole-heartedly endorse it. I've been using permetherin since the early '90s, and it's been a lifesaver.

There are a few threads here in the archives that deal with the spray vs soak methods, and some other things to think about.

I did a quick Goggle search that seems to indicate that Permethrin is effective against black flies too (bonus).

I also found a cool video from Pips about a bug net design that I am going to work on this weekend.

    Thanks!
