Video: DIY silnylon tarp in the rain

The other weekend I enjoyed waking up in the rain under my DIY silnylon tarp. I'd say it worked almost perfectly. This video shows how the rain beads and rolls off the tarp nicely. There's only one tiny spot the size of a dime that a droplet was bleeding through... that's it!

It cost me $8 for the silicon and paint thinner, and about $20 for the nylon. It's about 12 x 10 feet in size, and weighs 563 grams. It would likely cost me $150 or more to buy a tarp that size I figure.

It does look a little unprofessional. For some reason, the silicon did leave white blotches in areas, I don't know what caused that, and also a patch where it stuck together while drying.

Here's some pics of the tarp with close ups of my tie outs.

I can attest to its effectiveness as I sat under it and remained dry while enjoying a warm drink and good conversation. Great first effort IMO!

    Well heck!!

I didn't know that you DIY'd your tarp!!! That's amazing!

Is it possible to sew up the tarp or, say maybe, a canoe spray cover, and then apply the syl treatment afterwards to seam seal everything, or do you still have to do that afterwards?

    Nice work.

    wow! very nice.

I really like the fact you have doors in foul weather.

where did you get the silicon?

    DIY silnylon

Thanks everyone, glad you like it even though it looks so messy!

That's what I did in fact. I sewed the whole thing up and then dunked and squished it repeatedly, in a bucket of the silicon & paint thinner mix (using a rubber glove), then hung it out to dry.

I used the trick in the DIY silnylon thread of mixing the paint thinner with zip ties on a rod from my drill. It worked well. I used a full tube of silicon to something like 1/2 or 3/4 of the gallon of paint thinner.

Boy it was messy in the back yard, and stinks to high heaven. I wish I had done this in the daylight as well.

I've not tried it, but I recall reading about others who tried another approach; suspend it tightly and and use a foam roller brush to apply the silicon, perhaps several coats? I don't know if it works better than the dunk method, though. Just less messy perhaps?

@ bubba: It sure was! Good times!

@two isles : the silicon was just a tube from Home depot mixed with paint thinner / mineral spirits.
