I made a DIY SPE (Segmented Pad Extender) that's worked well. Sorry, no pics handy. See Just Jeff's one here. Others have made the wings by just laying a second pad below the first in a T shape. Sgt Rock's site has his "wing pad" that uses this method - and the sunscreen reflector - so that might be good to look at.
good job on the diy. Anything you can find that works, and is cheap, works best.
pssst....lorax. you have to remember that we northerners have ice in our blood. actually i'm thinking of going with a sheepskin for my pad and windscreen in one. bet that hide wouldn't scoot on the hammock. more pliable. wool!
Nice !
My local surplus store sells CCF pads with the reflective liner already attached for around $15.
Just a couple of random thoughts:
The bubble reflectors will have some bubbles pop eventually - maybe a foam backed reflector or just a space blanket might have better longevity.
Shelf liner + glue = heavy. A few silicone dots on the pad will keep it in place at a lesser weight penalty, although the grid in the shelf liner might add a bit of extra insulative ability with the dead air space between it and the reflector.
In my experience it's better to have space between you and the reflector (and most everything I have seen from the home/mechanical co's that employ the technology agree as well). Any direct contact with the reflective material will turn it into a conductor if it's exposed to open air - but they can be cut to fit to eliminate that effect.
Experience is the worst teacher - it presents the exam first and the lesson later. - Unknown
Anybody know how well this system would work with a single layer hammock?
pads are an inexpensive entry into keeping warm ... but in my experience I have found that the pads just aren't as comfortable as an UQ ..
"The wise man questions others wisdom because he questions his own, the foolish man because it is different from his own." Leo Stein
Should work very well. I am still a pad user, even after using good UQs. I like the simplicity and the ability to go to ground easily. The shelf liner should do a good job of keeping the pad from sliding.
I put dots of silicone caulk/adhesive on the back of a WM blue pad, and let it dry. They act like little grippers which keep the pad in place. Cheap/light/easy.
Have you packed the pad and hiked with it? The reflectix seems to squeak when I walk no matter how I pack it. Now I wrap it in an old silk sleeping bag liner, killed the noise, but add ed a few oz's. I wonder if backing it with the pad would quiet it down. Great idea, btw!!
Great idea!!.
Thanks for giving me a few ideas of my own.
