    Insulation Question (Need Some Feedback)

My plan in to make an underquilt for my hammock with several (light) layers that goes like this:

-1.1oz Downproof Ripstop (or Momentum 50)
    -Insultex
    -Down
    -Insultex
-1.1oz Downproof Ripstop (or Momentum 50)

Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? I don't see much about using two different types of insulation. I pdf at DIY Gear Supply shows you how to make a 3-season(35*), three layer insultex UQ so I figure two layers of IX with 20 or so ounces of down will get me into some deep cold.

P.S. I bought a down comforter on ebay for 50 bucks.

    It's specs:
-550 fill power (not the best, but it was 50 bucks. When I have more experience with down, I'll look for the 750-900 range)
-95 down/5 feather (this is as good as you get, even top top top of line down garments use this mix)
-54oz fill!! (I can make like 4 SUPERWARM down goodies with this much down!! Maybe more)
-And it's already in a baffled quilt so it'll be easier to work with.

This sounds like a win to me! Or did I just make a 50 dollar mistake?

    Edit

Someone from BPL asserted that it might be a bad idea to use the outside layer of IX because of breathability and moisture issues for the down.

So it may look more like this now:

    1.1 Ripstop
    Insultex
    Insultex
    Down
    1.1 Ripstop

And to be clear, these layers aren't "sandwiched" together. The down will get it's full lofting abilities. The IX will be baffled along with the Ripstop to give the down room. I just want some extra insulation for those icy nights.

I'll post a picture of my idea eventually for clarity.

What I'll probably do is sew (unhemmed) the IX to the Ripstop. Then I'll be able to create the baffles, hem everything in when I sew the inside and outside together, put the down in and close it up (obviously that's the short version)

    Does that make sense?

You will need to allow a small air gap between the layers of IX for them to insulate properly. Just follow the instructions on DIY Gear supply to do this. I can't quite tell from your description but is the IX on the outside or inside of the down? If it is on the outside the IX will cause condensation to for which would get the down wet, decreasing its ability to insulate. The reason the IX does this is it is practically a vapor barrier. If the IX is against the hammock though I don't think there is a problem with this idea. I have been thinking about it myself for a winter underquilt.

    Clarification

    No, Sorry How about this:

<-- Me, hanging in my hammock

    ______________ The UQ starts here___________
-----1.1 Ripstop on the outside of the UQ, but against my body---------
    ---------------------------------IX--------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------------IX--------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------Down-----------------------------------------
-----1.1 Ripstop on the outside of the UQ, and closest to the ground----

Sorry, I'll draw a picture soon!

Ok that would be the right way to do it. However, I'm not sure that you need 2 layers of IX. With 54oz of down to work with you should be fine making one out of just down and IX. The IX would be useful for blocking the wind.

    Trepidations

sclittlefield (who sells it) says here that it is not very packable and should be rolled versus stuffed into a bag. Do you think this will cause problems?

The more I look into and the more responses I get over at BPL (where I originally started this) the more it seems like a questionable idea.

Your plan may work well. the IX is a welcomed addition. I made an UQ using the same configuration, except I used Climashield instead of the down (wish I had used down, the climashield is a lot heavier) Consider using the IX as baffles, it can be sewn well enough to perform the task. Here is the technique I used to make mine. Good luck on it.

Insultex isn't very compressible, and you will lose the advantage of having down in the UQ. It will certainly be warmer, but you're probably better off using IX or down--not both.

If you already have the IX and down, make two quilts, and layer them in the same order you have said.

I was thinking along the same lines as Trooper. It seems like down and UQ shouldn't be in the same quilt. McEntyre sells IX inserts that I believe would go between the down UQ and hammock.
