    Ontario Hanger And Underquilt

I need your opinion on underquilts. Most of my camping is Algonquin Park. From mid June to September. At this time I do not expect to go a lot later...Would you suggest a 3/4 ot full lenght underquilt. I am a warm sleeper and I am looking for a 40 degree. I am not sure about the lenght.

    Thanks

I like the full body coverage that a full length offers. Having said that I have not tried a 3/4 length. My thinking is why carry more items like pads to cover your legs when 1 uq will do. JMHO

You'll be fine with a 3/4 UQ, it's what I use and I'm in Northern Ontario as well, in fact, some nights, it's too warm!

I frequent Algonquin and a 3/4 would be fine IMO.

Used my 3/4 in Algonquin many nights and never had a problem.

    Hiya!!!

I'm a fellow Algonquinite, although my trips are mainly in the early spring or late fall.

I'm with ScottD and the full length quilt. I doesn't weight that much more and it provides full protection in the event the weather turns really cold. I'd also say that if you're mainly canoeing then the weight savings don't really matter as much as if you were a dedicated hiker looking to shave off those ounces for those grueling 30km+ day hikes.

As for preference on underquilt length, it is just that a preference. I personally like full length. They are less hassle, in my opinion. You don't have to carry a pad for your legs. As Chard points out, if you are canoeing most of the time, then weight isn't much of a factor. One thing for the partial length quilts, is that they tend to be cheaper as there is less materials in their construction.

In case you hadn't seen this, the Ontario Hangers are having a year end hang this weekend. Drop on by and checkout everyone's gear. There will be just about everything to see hammock wise from most of the forum vendors and several DIY creations. Details can be found here.

    Cheers

Good luck with your hang this weekend. Hope the weather is good. As a former Oshawan from many years back I wish I could be there.

Totaly a matter of peference. Having used both, and the temps your are talking I personally would choose a 3/4 but YMMV. I find in warmer temps a 3/4 UQ has kept me plenty warm and if my feet/calvs do get cold I supplement with an CCF pad. I generally use a full length UQ for temps 20 and below.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
