    My First Thread Injector!

Hello everyone, I have been sitting here reading all your posts and contemplating getting into the DIY addiction. I like the idea of custom building my gear and having the knowledge of how to repair it is priceless I think. My first project is going to be adding full zippers to my HH Explorer Asym. I didn't have a sewing machine, so my mother-in-law gladly lent me hers, but I am a funny guy and needed one of my own. I looked at all the new offerings out there and came back disappointed, all the good stuff is way to expensive for me to justify and all the ones in my price range seem like junk. So I went to my local Craigslist and found an older Kenmore model 1249, 10 stitch machine that will easily sew through 5 layers of denim among other things, so I think it will be plenty heavy duty for my purposes. It runs silky smooth and will be a great beginner machine I think. I ordered zipper and other material from Quest Outfitters and am waiting for it to arrive. It is a little scary to take on a project like this, altering my perfectly good hammock , but I am trying to keep in mind that this type of thing is half the fun. I will keep you posted...

Congrats on the new addition. Let us know how it goes since this is a project I have been planning to tackle for some time but have yet to try.

you might ask You MIL to teach you how to do zippers...there is a bit of a learning curve. maybe you could start with a zippered duffle bag?

    Loving it!

After a almost full day of sewing on my new to me machine, I love it! I just installed my zipper mod on my HH last night and used the zipper foot attachment, that thing is pure genius. I sewed the first side without it and then remembered I had it in the box, using it makes things so much easier. I have another thread going on my mod, I also made myself some hammock tubes, but they aren't great, but a good first attempt and good for learning my machine.

What is a good and unexpensive sewing machine for my DIY projects? Most of the ones I find around here are old industrial machines and the cost from 400 to 500 dollars.

Congrats on your first thread injector! Sounds like you've already tackled one of the things that many of us have yet to do--zipper installation. Good on ya!

If you want a new machine, I am liking the Singer Heavy Duty, it sells for around $160 I believe and will sew through 10 to 12 layers of fairly heavy fabric with ease, there a video on Utube with a guy sewing through a yard stick, hehe which is completely useless of course but impressive. Good machine for the money IMHO. Good luck, I found mine on Craigslist and was about 3/4 of a mile from me. Just lucky I guess

I use a 50s model Singer 15-91. Perfect for the kind of sewing needed for DIY and can be had cheaply if you look around.
