    Cheap bottom insulation at Ikea

I was at Ikea today and came across a cheap lightweight synthetic-fill comforter that looks like it has a lot of potential for a DIY underquilt using the same construction techniques as a poncho liner. It has a porous outer shell, so it will need an undercover or something like a space blanket.

    Twin size $7.99
    Length: 86 "
    Width: 64 "
    Filling weight: 13 oz
    Total weight: 23 oz

For the price you could do a lot of experimenting. Let us know what you come up with. We got an ikea here in portland. Might have to pick one up. Thanks.

Its practically big enough to do a peapod type solution. Good find.

    Cheers

I, by the benevolence of Zeus, found a older down mummy bag at a thrift store for 7 bucks but having to deal with loose down and all the mods I would have to make it just sounds awful. This could be a sweet for the shear fact that modifying would be way easy. Please try it out and let us know what temperature it goes down to.

Does anyone know if the same Poly fiber fill stuff you can find at Joanns and other fine fabric stores is the same stuff you would find in these Ikea comforters?

Close, but hard to say without opening one up. It looked like one bat of polyester fill in a sewn-through cover made of polypropylene with ventilation holes embossed or die cut in it. The twin size would work well folded and strung up like a PLUQ. I think it would need some sort of cover to keep it from allowing too much airflow. You could make a big envelope out of a space blanket or use a cover like the 2QZQ undercover or it would work nice with the Hennessy SuperShelter cover.

They have a full/queen size for a dollar more if you want to make someone more PeaPod-like, or have more layers.

Dwr ripstop would stop some breezes, I'd be careful with a space blanket, as it can trap moisture...

OMW to Ikea with my daughter now to buy a new mattress... I'll check them out!

Just 10 oz for the polyprop shell?

    DaleW:

Just 10 oz for the polyprop shell? That's just 2 oz more than a ripstop 1.1 nylon shell to enclose similar sized quilts.

It obviously cost Ikea very, very little. Is it woven and did it appear to have sufficient strength for an UQ. Or was it like the non-woven ulta-light pressed material of $1 store laundry bags from China, the ones with a woven mesh square on the front?
