For reference, what is the dimension of the individual squares in the rip stop?

    TIA

    I'm back.
I think I may have scored the elusive nysil ripstop.

I knw it's ripstop, the grid is unmistakeable. I bought eight yards, thinking I would make a hammock, but when I tested it at home, it holds water like a rubber sheet.

I may have to make a tarp instead.

The grey regular nylon I saw yesterday was gone. Jeff, were you in Winter Haven, Florida??

I also got some toille for $.50 per yard. Looks like it will be fine for mosquito netting

Nope - not in Winter Haven...can't take credit for that one.

Try to blow through it - if you can't, it's sil. If it's hard to blow through, it's DWR. If it's easy, it's just ripstop. (Generally speaking, of course - there are lots of other materials out there.)

Some Walmarts are having a 50% off sale to get rid of their fabrics...I scored several yards of stuff for $.50 recently. Sad to see it all go. But it was funny when the fabric lady said, "We got us a bunch of mad old ladies 'caws wer closin' it dayown." Guess I'm an old lady now...

Thanks Jeff. It is nysil. I can't blow through it.

That means no good for a hammock, right?? No breathability.

Now I gotta find 8 yards of 1.1 nylon somewhere. Maybe I'll check the "good Wallmart" . Maybe they are back in the bargain business too.

Most folks use breathable materials for hammocks. If you're using a non-breathable pad for insulation it may not make much difference, though. Maybe some more condensation if you breathe against it or something. I forget who, but somebody posted about making one on the yahoo group and said it was working out ok.

The Crazy Creek I tested had a non-breathable bottom and wasn't bad for condensation, although I never had a hot muggy night in it. I'm sure I'd want something breathable for camping in the southern summers.

So I wouldn't say it's no good, but in general I'll stick with breathable materials.

8 yards is enough to do a tarp 10-12 foot tarp!

8 yards should be plenty. I would try cutting it in half and using each side as half the tarp. With seams it should come out to 11' 8" or something. But I'll wait to let the tarp experts confirm this.

If you want a longer ridgeline and are not married to the idea of a rectangler tarp, you might want to look into one based on the Kelty Noah.

I use exactly 8 yards to make my BlackCat. With the width of Ed's stock (66"), I get a 12' ridge and 11' width.
