    Hammock Hanging with one Tree

    Has anyone done it?

We went out last weekend and its going to be a regular spot for us, but the only downfall is.... lack of hammocking tree's, there are tree lines, but none suitable (without hacking vegetation away) to hang from.

So i was thinking of something along the lines of x2 pieces of 3"x2" timber, 4-5' long, coach bolted together at the top with some D shackle's attached, then placed in an upside down V configuration and then using two heavy duty dog tethers to anchor it on the opposite side?

pardon the crude drawing, but something like this...

You'll need an extra strong anchor on the stand side. The math wizards have a formula for distance from the stand to the anchor point. Farther is better to reduce the uplift effect on the anchor/stake.
Multiple stakes have been done too, with sucess.
There are various pics and stand ideas.
A few folks have built simple bamboo stands that carry both ends of the hammock.

Either way you go about it, you need good solid soil and strong/long anchors/stakes.
Never hang higher than your willing to fall.
A third leg on your stand with help reduce the inward pull that comes from an occupied hammock.

The only one tree hang I did was a big pine tree with two very big beafy branches on it. I tied a small rope to both of my carabiners so I could pull both down when done, thru the straps over both of the branches clipped the carabiners on the straps like they were around the tree only now they were around the pranch, and there you go a one tree hang. The tarp was not much of a problem because I was too drunk to worry about it. Sorry no pictures I didn't have my camera at the time.

    Yep. Been there, done that.

You can either use a bipod for a tree substitute or a monopod - the monopod requires two substantial guylines (Amsteel) and two substantial anchors.

For anchors I have been using the big orange contractor stakes found at Lowes, three per line, set up using a load-equalizing hitch. It uses a continuous loop of Amsteel (12-15 feet) so that each anchor stake receives 1/3 of the load. So far, no failures!

There is a tree by a local park in which I have speculated you could hang 3 hammocks. As I only have one hammock, I have not yet had the chance to try this, but I will try to swing by there this weekend with my hammock and take a few pics.

Like your pic. As others have said, you will need a few more guy lines. I recomend 3. One in line with the hang and 2 lateral supporting lines for the twist factor.
The more guy lines and anchors the better for soft soils. Also you can use the dog tie-down type stakes that ressemble a corkscrew for really soft ground.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Found a pic to prove that it DID HAPPEN!

I set this anchor up with a poly canoe strap, before I made my Amsteel loops.
