Here is a pic of a setup that I made.
The key to the setup for me was the paracord that runs from the pole to the tree. This helped to keep a constant force on the pole, so that when when I would get in and out of the hammock the pole woud not move. I also created a little base at the bottom of the pole, with 2 stakes going threw it, to hold the bottom of the pole in place. This was done by just routing out the area for the pole and then drilling two stake holes.

If I remember correctly the post is 3/4" or maybe 1" rigid conduit. Because both the anchor and suspension are at the same point on the pole, it only has to take the vertical load.

Alamosa has a great thread http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34776 This is the guide that I used to make mine. I made two supports and can go completly tree-less if I have to.

Not sure if I would trust this design that much but it may give you some ideas.

    Two Isles:

I actualy made two Amsteel slings with spliced loops at each end, measuring about 15 feet overall. So I guess I used about 17 feet in each, allowing for the bury.

There really is a lot of force trying to pull those stakes out of the ground. Depending on the soil and the stakes,

<voice of experience> you can find yourself on the ground </voice of experience>.

What I've done in my yard is to use a pole over the hammock to take the compression forces. Created an attachment for it to butt up against the tree (with a wide base to distribute the force some) and hang it there, and have the other end rest on the crossed uprights. Hang the hammock from the pole. Have a look at this thread and imagine a tree securing one end.

You'll need only ordinary stakes and cords for a crossed pole end, none for a tripod.

The real challenge is find a long enough pole that is strong.
The thread mentioned above discusses that. For car camping there can be the additional constraint that it can be disassembled. I've used narrow pipes, two 6' sections and a screw-in join in the middle. Heavy, but it works.

This has been my back garden setup for the last five years. I use one of the heavy duty screw in anchors at each end.

Thinking of trying it with a couple of delta anchors at each end instead, as the screw in ones work loose over a season.

    As Griz said,

"There really is a lot of force trying to pull those stakes out of the ground"

Sho nuff. I keep the anchor lines at about 30 deg from horizontal to minimize the applied force - just like hammock suspension. Those orange contractors stakes are about a foot long and really offer a lot of resistance to pull-out. Not for backpacking, but for car camping what the hey. I am experimenting with a single pole consisting of three 24" sections of 1" SC40 alu pipe with threaded connectors, a flange screwed to the bottom, and a T at the top padded with vinyl tubing to cover the threads. Again, for car camping.

I may have a chance to futz with it tomorrow, so I will take some pics.

Just had ago at the first attempt of one pole and x3 boom stakes....

didnt go all that well tbh, i've only used 10" stakes and they dont seem to hold that well in the soft soil. I've looked for longer stakes but cannot find any, so im either going to get some mild steel and make some stakes, or get some studed bar and weld a nut onto the top.
