Suggestions wanted - March trip suggestions

    Hi all.

I'm looking for ideas for a solo backpacking trip in mid-March lasting 3 or 4 nights in the US. What I'm looking for is somewhere reasonably remote and don't mind some climbing but would rather not be doing it all day.

Most importantly after spending a Canadian winter (mostly indoors) I'll be looking to go somewhere reasonably warm (40F nights?) and not having to trek through deep snow. 6 or 7 hours per day on the trail is what I was thinking and have no problem with a trip that involves significant bushwhacking.

For some reason I've thought the the US South West might be a possibility since I've never been there but that's flexible.

Most importantly is being able to hang each night.

I'd appreciate whatever suggestions you are willing to give.

    Thanks in advance,

    Keg

May I suggest the Ocala National Forest North & South sections of the Florida trail?

While not particularly remote from people, it should be beautiful in March. Averages in the high seventies during the day, low fifties at night. The records stand in the upper nineties and mid-twenties, though, so it may be worth paying attention to the weather report before leaving.

In addition, the forest itself has a lot to offer; there's everything from kayaking runs to a shooting range tucked in there. It's worth looking over, even if you don't decide to do the trail.

If you want any information about the Ocala South section of the trail, I can help; I did it this past summer.

Look at the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama as well as the Mt. Cheaha area for many trails that are a hanger paradise that time of year. Temps could be a problem though as it might be colder than what you list.

Foothills trail in SC is supposed to be pretty nice. I've never hiked it, but i'm familiar with the area it runs through and it's really nice country. it may be a little longer than what you're looking for, but you can break it into sections for shorter hikes.

How about the Buffalo River Trail in Arkansas when there is a hang in March. Other trails in Arkansas would be the Ozark Highlands trail, Ouachita trail, Eagle Rock loop.

Palmetto trail in SouthCarolina has a section from Charleston running northwest, flat and fast with some great hangs.

Go for Southern Utah. You can't go wrong with Zions NP and the amazing Dixie National Forest. Go a bit more southeast and try the Coyote Gulch trail. More remote, more demanding, and lots of great views.

Thanks for the suggestions (and I welcome more). I figure that nights around freezing will be fine as long as I don't need snowshoes.

Too many places to go, no one to pay my bills when I'm there.
