So I have been trying to figure out what to do with my backpack while hammock camping... I don't like the idea of my new gregory pack that I spent my hard earned money on, sitting in the muck if it's rainy and the ground is soft.

Hang it on your ridgeline, gear hammock or you can get some sort of ground cloth to put under your hammock and set your pack on that.

A tyvek ground sheet has a lot of uses. Another option would be a light weight gear hammock. It can also be a jerry chair when the weather is good.
Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.
Several threads about this on the forum. I'm sure you'll find a way that works for you.
Another simple option is a pack cover. I use one on my pack and invert my pack so the pack cover is on the ground like a boat. When the water comes it hits the cover and not my pack. Its under my tarp so this rarely happens.
I either hang it on a tree with a pack cover on, or set in on a ground cloth under the hammock, or hang it from the head end of the hammock on the suspension line. It really depends on where I am and what kind of mood I'm in... but those are my choices.

I take a thin lightweight black trash bag specifically for the purpose of bagging my backpack and tying it up. Then I'll lay it on the ground under the hammock and its a done deal. the trash bag is always useful for a variety of situations.
Some of us use 2/3rds UQs or 3/4s UQs and put it under our heels at night inside the hammock.
Sometimes I'll wrap it in a garbage bag (my pack liner) and set it on the ground. If I'm doing an overnighter and suspect rain I'll just clip it to my suspension with a carabiner and hang my waterproof jacket over it.
I've heard that a lot of folks use it for foot insulation too - I'm thinking of trying that, my heels always seem to feel cold.
