DIY under quilt from old sleeping bag

Today I took my old (about 15 yrs old) synthetic sleeping bag and cut it down to size, ripped off the zippers, and finally ripped out the old insulation. For fun I stuffed part of it tonight with down that I got from a comforter off craigslist for $10. That comforter will likely fill 3/4 of it. My aunt said she thinks she has a down comforter that she can send me for free! so looks like my under quilt will be rather cheap! hoping it works well when it's finished! the part I stuffed tonight has about a 3" loft... I might stuff it a bit more than that though. I'll update this when I finish it up... just had to share my progress for today because I'm super excited!

I feel the craigslist sleeping bag section will be demolished in the twin cities
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

A good place to find sleeping bags is at yard sales, and you can get them for next to nothing. I got a poncho liner for $1. I am on the look out for sleeping bags to convert to underquilts. I love a good yard sale.

Well I finally finished my UQ and am actually typing this update from my phone as I lay in my hammock. It's pretty toasty and was relatively easy. It's right around 30 degrees right now and pretty breezy. The one thing I'm noticing is that the stronger gusts of wind are robbing some of my warmth...not too bad at this point. I should also add that I have no tarp or UQ protector on/up. I think my oldman winter tarp will do a good job blocking the wind. I'm guessing that this under quilt would comfortably get me to 20 degrees and maybe a little cooler...if I added an emergency blanket I'm guessing this would work fine for winter nights....most winter nights....not those -26 degree nights that shug does! have my first hang this weekend and I'm excited! I look forward to updating everyone on how the UQ does this weekend and further into winter and colder temps!

Should also add that I'm only wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and dress socks.

wow you dug this thread up from a long time ago I no longer have this. It worked good while I was just starting out. Looking back, I should have saved the time and just purchased a "real" underquilt or the right materials to make one.
