    Needle feed sewing machine?

Is this machine type any good for sewing light fabrics like hammocks?
I am a bit of a techno nerd so I do keep an eye on what’s for sale and found an old industrial Juki DLN-41 for $180.
I doubt I will buy it because I don’t like the idea having an open oil pan around and I really don’t have the space but its free to look and if the price goes down…………

I say nothing against a Juki DLN-41, but against the 180$.

I know you have a Pfaff machine already. If i were you than I would buy a second machine like a Pfaff 30 with a treadle or a hand crank (you don't need the treadle - the machine is fast enough with the hand wheel as long as the machine is not not connected with any motor or the treadle), or another very good old treadle machine for 1€ on Ebay. You will get an aha-effect. My old treadle maschine sews light fabrics perfect and I can sew as slow as I want and even my top speed is most likely slower than your slowest speed but fast enough for me. You have a better control what happens, stitch by stitch.

(As you already noticed. I can sew the whole night long without distrubing any neighbour and with candle light, if i want).

By the price, I'm guessing that's just a machine head. Keep in mind you'll probably need a table, and motor for it also. If not, I'd be wary why the machine is selling for so little.

Needle feed, in itself, wont make a machine better or worse for light fabric. It will help feed two layers of fabric evenly, as the needle is used to help index the fabric, along with the feed dogs. In certain situations this can be beneficial, especially when sewing stretchy materials. It generally wont hurt anything.

I do have a Pfaff Select 3.0 and it stays. Old “treadle machines” is cool but is not for me.

The Juki is including table and motor and it uses 230V (domestic power around here) and it runs according to the seller. Most industrial sewing machines uses 400V and most households have it for stows or washing machines but it’s not available in all rooms.
I can’t find one good excuse to buy a machine like that other than its nice to have. I was only curious.

I know your Pfaff Select. It is a good machine (up to the nylon gears you have inside the machine). I would stay with it too.

I don't know how much hammocks you still want to sew. I would buy a Juki DLN-41 only if I would have in mind to sew more than 10 hammocks within the next 6 months professionally.

If you want only to increase your stitch quality for critical sewing tasks then you should think about my proposal more than twice or ask the experts in this forum what is best for your needs.

The open oil bath is a big deal for me because I live in an apartment and don’t have a dedicated room so it would be moved around a lot and it’s an accident waiting to happen and on wooden floors ….
otherwise I would probably go for it.

    BTW
Its no longer for sale so problem solved for now
