Mt. LeConte hike in GSMNP; 10/26&27/11

Sorry we missed each other on my Foothills hike, Swampfox, but some day. Some day we will. How 'bout my next trip to visit family in SC, we meet at the new REI in Greenville?

The last time I was at the Jumpoff you could see about fifteen feet--glad you had better views.

My only time at Charlie's Bunion (I thru'd the GSMNP on the AT in '05), that was my situation too. I could see about 50 feet.

Absolutely! And so nice after I couldn't see anything from CB the time I was there in '05.

I did that hike a few years ago, up Rainbow Trail. Stayed at the lodge.

I've stayed at the Lodge three times with my family. Twice we did Rainbow Falls Trail, once Trillium Gap Trail (the one the llama supply train uses), and each time down Bullhead Trail. The Lodge experience is sweet! The same concessionaire runs Charit Creek Lodge in the Big South Fork. Also sweet!

"At 6593 feet, Mount LeConte is the third highest peak in the Smokies. However, measured from its immediate base to its highest point, Mt. LeConte can be considered the tallest mountain in the Eastern United States, rising 5301 feet from its base near Gatlinburg."

Oh, some truth in advertising ... we did NOT climb LeConte from its base, but rather from the Alum Cave trailhead, so we did about 2,800' and not the whole 5,300'.

And to all who posted thanks, you are very welcome! It's fun to prepare for a hike. It's fun to do the hike. And it's fun to relive it!

Met a lot of folks who were coming back down the trail on Wednesday afternoon (as we were hiking up), many wearing LeConte t-shirts (new or old)! You're not alone. Glad you liked the pics and memories!
