Foothills Trail Thru Hike, Fall '08.

I had planned on doing a thru hike of the Foothills Trail this spring but things really didn't work out so I am shooting for a fall hike, probably sometime in September.

I am looking at completing the trail in 5 days, maybe 6. I have a itinerary at home that I will post when I get a chance.

I am really hoping to be able to do this trail, but it's still kinda up in the air. If anyone thinks they may like to join me, please let me know.

I'd be interested if I could keep your pace. As you know, I hike much slower and would need 6-7 days to do it. Maybe that's a possibility for the fall for me to get away.

The Foothills trail is really nice, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I did it last year in November in 4 1/2 days, but the majority of one day was spent in a parking lot waiting for a transport to arrive to take an injured hiker off the trail. Five or six days should be plenty of time. Get ready for some stair climbing, though! I would love to go back and do the trail again without ground-dwellers in the party. Two of the camp sites we stayed at were pretty trashed and infested by mice. If it hadn't been for the guys in tents, we would have found much more beautiful spots to camp. Depending on when you go in September, I might be able to join you if you'll take me along.

In September last year, I did a day hike from the Table Rock trail head up Mt. Sassafras and back, and there was very little water. A lot of the sources listed in the guide book were dry. In November, water was no problem at all on the trail.

If you don't have the guide book already, let me know. If I can find mine, I'd be glad to send it to you.

I might be able to do that hike in September. It would be more pleasant later in the month. It is still quite warm in early Sept and I don't believe the Foothills Trail has enough of an average altitude to offset the summer heat very much.

Just don't forget, Slowhike, you promised me a hike after I get moved.

for sure! a weekend hike is much easier to manage right now than a several day hike<G>.

I'm also thinking about doing a food cache somewhere around the half way point so that I wouldn't have to carry 5-6 days worth of food, keeping my pack weight down. I assume this is feasible with this trail?

I got both the map and the guide book, but thanks so much for the offer. The map seems like it would be the only thing I would need to carry.
