    I might try this

    or this:
    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ndingMethod=rr

That way he can be secured to prevent nighttime wanderings.

I like the idea of hanging something off the suspension. I might have to try that as well.

I have a border collie that is a little over 50lbs as my hiking partner. She is a bit too big to comfortably sleep with me in the hammock so I have tried a couple things for her. First, I always carry a US military poncho with me (with snaps down each side) while backpacking. I create an A-frame shelter with the poncho (sides snapped shut) and some extra amsteel. I then stake the bottom out with some trail sticks and it works like a charm. Other times I simply tie her lead to a tree/root (as she is still young and likes to explore) under my tarp and she lays on a wool blanket for under insulation when it is cold. I definitely advocate hiking with a dog but you must take responsibility for it.

I have two dogs and only one likes hanging.
My other dog will not get in a hammock.

Got a 50lb black lab who's still pup. If she were calm, she could hang with me. Last trip, in the morning I let her hop in. Nails weren't a prob since I use a full length foam pad. I shoved her toward the foot end enuff so my butt was on the pad and my legs were over her. We were super comfy and made the cool morning really warm! Then some small animal moved nearby in the woods and it was chaos. Black legs flailing everywhere then dumping herself out of the hammock. Would have sucked at 2am. Or if I had skeeter netting up.

So I'll keep her under me on the ground. She packs her own foam pad and sleeping bag segment. Retrievers are double coated so i dont worry too much unless it would be really cold. My newest pup is a Doberman and they don't do cold well at all. So im really interested in these ideas that suspend from the hammock. I was thinking about adding to my tarp to include "doors" and take the tarp all the way to the ground. But he won't start packing til spring.
