I think I found my dream hammock setup in my garage!

So I'm doing a home improvement project this week, rooting around in my cluttered garage for tools and stuff I need. Lo and behold, I think I found plenty of stuff to sell that will finance my dream hammock setup!

I found 30+ brand new unopened data fiber optic cables. These things are expensive. Even if I sell them cheap, I can probably get $300 for them. So now that I know there's treasure in the garage, I start rooting around some more. I find several finished Cat 6e data cables that will probably fetch another $100 on bay of evil.

Then I find the holy grail: a stash of Cisco networking equipment I've had for a year or two, thrown out on the curb by a company in financial turmoil. I test it all out, then call a buyer of Cisco used equipment to see what he'll pay. He says he'll give me $800 for one item alone, a Cisco 2851 router. I look it up & list price is over $6000 new. And I've got plenty of other routers and switches, including a Catalyst 6509.

So it looks like I have some gear enhancements in my near future once I sell this stuff. To top it all off, I've been looking for some cheap (read free) Tyvek so I could make a DIY tarp. I found 30 ft. of brand new Tyvek right there in my garage! Who knew there was buried treasure in there.

Already dreaming of what I'm gonna buy:

    Hammock Gear 0* Incubator UQ, 28.5 oz - $264.00
    Hammock Gear 0* Burrow TQ, 25.5 oz - $254.00
Zpacks Cuben Fiber Hammock Tarp with doors, 6.5 oz - $299
    Warbonnet Blackbird Double Layer 1.1, 24 oz - $175.00
    REI Flash 65 Backpack, 46 oz - $134.93

Total weight 8.16 lbs, total price $1126.93 excluding shipping

Obviously, this is not an ultralight setup, since I'm not including cook gear, fuel, clothing, first aid & repair kit, water filter, bottles, etc. However, I want something for winter camping, below 20 degrees. I may find that a zero degree TQ & UQ is just too hot, since I'm a hot sleeper. If that's the case, I can always sell the zero TQ & UQ and downgrade to 20 degree.

For temps over 20, I figure I can get by with a pad and space blanket, maybe with a DIY IX UQ. Or maybe I'll just vent like hell on the TQ to cool off.

I hope I'm able to unload this stuff soon so I can start making some gear purchases!

Sell the Catalyst 6509 and buy a ULA Catalyst.

Congrats. Sounds like you need to clean your garage more often, hehe. Wish I could find treasures like that.

Sounds like a great plan to me! Go with the 20° gear though. You'll use it more and can always though on extra clothes on the really cold nights.

Perrito, I was leaning towards the 20 degree anyway since I sleep hot. Saves me $100 and over 1 lb. in weight too. However, I'm blaming you if I'm cold this winter.

ah! ca$h in the garage! I just did a yard sale a month ago & found about $700 of treasure in my barn & garage.

when getting the new gear- then seeing how much space you need total, you may want to wait on the backpack choice. you might be able to get a lighter/smaller pack for just a few more bucks

good luck on selling your stuff!

    New Gear

    SilvrSurfr,

I really is hard to go to MAHHA and see all the cool gear and not want to upgrade! I just ordered a HG Incubator 20 deg....

My advice is to make sure your pack is right for you. The fit is important.
Have your torso measured and make sure you try the pack on (with weight in it). Nothing worse than an ill-fitting pack that pinches your shoulders or does not transfer the pack weight to your hips.. You will have this Pack on for hours during every hike and is right behind a good fitting footwear!

It was great meeting you and see you on the trail.
