First hammping trip and we survived:)

This past weekend one of my brothers, his son, my son and myself went hammping (hammock camping) at Lost Maples State Natural Area in the hill country of South Texas. We had a blast.

When we devised this trip I made a couple of rules

Rule 1: you must make your own hammock. My son and I made them from king size sheets. My brother and his son made them from fabric left over from a drapery job at my Mom's drapery business.

Rule 2: no packs. You have to use your hammock as your pack. This worked but it was a pain in the shoulders...literaly. We used the ropes that suspend the hammock as the shoulder straps. It's a 2 mile hike into the site. By that time the ropes were cutting into our shoulders pretty good. This was a good sign that we all brought too much stuff. Next time we will pack lighter but we will also use our packs Yep...we are wusses!

My nephew hangin in the trees. He slept in his hammock one night then made a debris shelter to sleep in the second night.

    Lots of fun!

Wow, what a trek! I've had some people suggest using tree webbing straps as backpack straps. Sounds like you guys made it work. What a great idea. I think I'll suggest this for my Boy Scout troop.

My brother and nephew thought they were going to freeze to death the first night. They didn't bring sleeping bags. Relied on blanket only. They won't do that again. My son got a little cold the first night but not bad. I could feel the cold a little on my back but not enough to make for a rough night.

    The second night was PERFECT!

I think the webbing would make it MUCH more comfortable to carry. The rope on my shoulders was the only problem. Having all my gear rolled up on the hammock like a bedroll worked great. I picked up some strapping today at work (leftover from a job) that I will make into tree straps.

This would be a great challenge for a Boy Scout Troop.
