Smile VIDEO: Gear Talk - DIY Bridge Hammock

Well, I finally made my first DIY Bridge Hammock! I prefer to sleep on my stomach, and wanted to see if a Bridge Hammock would let me do that. There will be more testing to come, but first wanted to get out a video showing how I put mine together and the choices that I made.

Special thanks to Grizz, TeeDee, and all of the folks that have provided helpful Bridge Hammock info on the forum!

Please feel free to let me know of any ideas, thoughts or questions that you have, as I really want to try to put together the best system possible

    Thanks again!

Must say that I didn't get the best sleep when trying to sleep on stomach. Way too much arm squeeze and it pressed the heels of my feet together. I think that I'm going to try to widen the spreaders some. Of course, I'll have to lengthen the triangles some as well.

Any other ideas? I'm completely open. I just want to be able to sleep on my stomach

Well, I lengthened one of the spreader bars to 40" with a corresponding triangle length of 30". I replaced the foot end spreader bar and triangle with that to make it the new head end so that I would have 40" spread on the head end and 32" spread on the foot end.

Looked really promising. The sides that were squeezing me so were now pulled out further and it looked inviting. . .

I lay in the newly suspended hammock and it felt wonderful - for the half second that it took for the compression forces to shear the 40" spreader bar hiking pool in half . . .

Rather spectacular, actually. Guess I'll go have a beer and think about it some more. . .

Will post a photo of the pole when I get my wits back

    Bah humbug, huh.

I haven't been in a bridge hammock before, but best of luck on the take a step back and re-attack scenario.

Suspension sounds short. My use 36'' bars with a 30'' triangle and they work great. Haven't had a problem yet. That material does look thin. I use mule tape on the two I made. I am thinking of trying amsteel but undecided. I saw Hangnout made one recently and I am hoping he will post a video of it soon. Good luck to you on getting it to hang like you want.

I am curious about how this ended up for you, especially with the stomach sleeping. I tend to sleep on my stomach when in a bed. Its different laying on my back in a hammock.

Yeah, the material is definitely thin. I'll work on that in my next model. Really just trying to use this one to try to figure everything out. Look forward to the video!

Actually, this was very disappointing. It squeezed my shoulders and heels so bad that I had to abandon it in the middle of the night. I'm working on trying to dial-in the spreader bar lengths to see if that will help.

I haven't given up hope, but my first lengthened spreader bar test went catastrophically ( I have a thread here trying to get some advice with it: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=41106
