    Packable Rain Catch

I've had this idea for some time, and reading how much you guys enjoy making your own gear I thought I'd throw the idea out there. How nice would a rain catch, small and light enough for backpacking be? Try to picture a circular-cut piece of one of the lightweight tarp fabrics such as silnylon. Hem the edge with a drawstring inside. Stich loops, maybe 1'' webbing, spaced around the perimeter. Now cinch the cord and tie off the loops to surrounding limbs, and you could wake up after an all night rainstorm to fresh water. It wouldn't need to be deep, more wide than deep. Just wide and deep enough to be sufficient. If anyone decides to make one some day let me know.

Or attach it to the bottom hem of your tarp for maximum water collection in the rain.

That's a good idea. And maybe just a few propped up sticks for the other side.

That is a good idea. Not sure I'd want to catch water off of my tarp, as I have had birds leave "presents" on my tarps. :-)

Attach a gravity filter system to it and the bird doo is not an issue

Sweet! I've had good luck with the funnels that Hennessy used to have for the tarp. Bird poo-yes but filter it and no prob or use it for doggie water, clean up water. Hey H2O is some valuable stuff most of the time. Just sayin.
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

I set up a rain catch once using my tarp and some string tied from one of the corners leading to a bottle. Worked quite well. When I set up porch mode I always set up with one pole shorter than the other so water does not collect and creat a small pool over my porch. The string I tied to the lower end then lead down and into the bottle. Didn't take that long to fill and it was just fun to do.

You can use your pack cover for what you described, I have collected water in mine and filtered it from there.
