    tarp skins questions

I finally got around to doing a few projects this last weekend and one of them was making skins for the tarp.

Now that they're put together on on the tarp, I realize there's no where for my suspension lines hanging out of the ends of the skins. In a stuff sack, these get tucked away. What do you guys do with the long dangling suspension lines? For now, I just wrapped them several times around the skins which I don't care for too much.

2nd question, how do you normally store this in your pack? With my stuff sack, I could easily put it in a side pocket and be done. The skin seems to take up much more room. I realize it's uncompressed and in theory should be easier to stuff in all the empty space but again, it seems cumbersome. For now, I just stuff the tarp in the skins in my stuff sack - which seems counter productive...

Just looking for tips from those who use 'em.
    Thanks,
    -scum

You can sew a pocket on each skin for the lines. Will the filled skins still fold/stuff into the same side pocket as they did when bagged?

I have skins made by mountaingoat that have pockets in the ends for the tie outs. Other than that, wrapping around the end should work.

I keep my tarp in a stuff sack, even though it's in skins. My skins are mesh, and generally help when putting my tarp up. I always tie the tarp up, but don't always deploy it. Having it ready to go for those sudden storms is nice though.

My stuff sack has my tarp and stakes, and stores in the out side of my pack. This may be counterproductive, but works for me.

my skins are from wilderness logistics and it looks like the ends are folded back onto itself creating the pocket, which i can tuck the lines in (but i dont)

i use a stuff sack still with the skins, just to make things easier. but you can also hang it off the packs.

With some effort simply because it's harder to 'contain' the skins than a stuff sack. To be honest, I like the idea of stuffing my skins into the old sack. A little wasted weight I suppose but it makes it easier to manage for stowing in my pack. Kind of the best of both worlds...

Scum I think this is what I'm going to do also. I just got my snake skins (Thanks Fronkey) and I think I will use those mainly for tarp containment. In my bag I will prolly stuff sack it, at least for now anyway.

you can "figure 8" your RL and tuck them back into the skin opening.
i also use elastic hair bands around my skins after i fold the ends to the middle and then fold that in half again.
i keep my tarp on the outside of my pack most of the time.

I fold my tarp (in skins) in quarter and then use the lines to wrap everything up. Easy peasey 1,2,3zee. The lines do get tangled on occasion, but it's never taken me more than a few minutes to straighten things out.

    Cheers,

I also use the WL skins for my tarp. However I found that I really only need one side (to save some weight and bulk).

I slide the skin over like normal and stuff the rest in the end. Fold it a few times, rubber band it, and stick it in a outside pocket of my pack. I use the one folded over part of the skin for the ridge lines.
