From what I gather from this and other posts, a set of quilts made with 6 oz Climashield could take one in the 20s, maybe even low 20s. Butm I haven't seen that much about the 3 oz material. What temps might the 3 oz be rated for?

I'm pretty much settled on Climashield Apex for DIY quilt sets for me and the kids. May end up making two sets for me, one 3 oz and one 6 oz (I like to camp in the winter) but since my kids will likely only camp in warmer weather (mid 40s and above), I'm thinking 3 oz might be sufficient (they have blue pads in case they need some extra underneath)...

    Thoughts?

I made a DIY UQ using Climashield and love it. I stuffed a bunch of small scraps (left over from a few years of making quilts for others) into channels and it worked out great. I went a little overboard on the first go around and the quilt weighed too much so I pulled out enough to get it to a reasonable weight, leaving less at the ends to assist the tapering effect.
Happy Trails to one and all.

    really cold UQ

For the DIY quilts, anyone know where to find info on how many inches loft of thinsulate, primaloft or climashield is needed for extreme cold weather ?

From what I understand, to stay warm while sleeping in -20 c I'd need a clo value of about 9.

If I sleeping in thermal base layers like marino, with toque and gloves might give me 1 clo as a starting point. Down booties would help too.
(According to the US Air Force Survival Book, one layer of long underwear (long pants + long-sleeved top) equals a clo-value of 0.6. (cotton 0.4)

    Reference Chart:
The following chart shows the clo units needed as temperature changes. A low level of activity is a MET of 1. (Sleeping 0.9) The greater the activity level (MET) the less insulation is required (clo). The the lower the temperature, the more insulation is required.
