-hypothetical gear... a tarp skirt with attached doors allowing room to stand up and still get coverage to the ground.
-hypothetical gear... a crazy creek or Jerry chair modified and attached to the pack to use as a seat that incorporates the pack as part of the chair back support.
-hypothetical gear... a Back country boiler that weighs less than 5 ounces
    - hypothetical gear... freeze dried ceviche
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

I have been trying to perfect the reflective aluminum thing for over 50 years; back in scouts we tried aluminum foil as under the shirt vests. In explorer scouts we tried wearing plastic garbage bags and space blankets. Over the years I have spent many a night in a very TIGHT deer blind where waking up in the morning the windows would be misted over and the ceiling would be very damp. In a particularly cold hunting season I wanted a catalytic heater in the blind but did not want to wake up dead. I did the calculations of the required ventilation in and out holes and doubled that. Hey no more moisture ??? Imagine that? And since the heat rose, the deer and the feral hogs did not smell anything.
A year or two ago I ran across the Blizzard Survival Blanket which has two layers of pretty strong aluminum with air chambers between them. I have slept out in that in below 20 degree wind chill just fine as long as I kept a hole open for my breathing. Noisy as a brass band but a lifesaver.
Awhile back I found a Youtube video series that always have the title Girl or girly in them. She is from Norway and obviously has a lot of winter camp experience. She has a UCO candle that see uses with what essentially is a tall reflective and insulated sock. She should have stressed the ventilation aspect. I will have go look for her video and post it since it is on point.

I agree that body heat and proper gear should be the first option but sometimes murphy strikes and a secondary heat source, if safe, can mean a lot. Before the days of semi accurate weather reporting while in scouts we had our share of close calls.
    Good info folks,
    Paul

Good link. I've subscribed. I think the real key to the success of her system is the overhead breathing hole.
