    shock cord ends

Hey all - what is the best way to treat an end of shock cord that is freshly cut so it doesn't fray?

I don't use a lot of it and when I do, its the heavier stuff.(for my kayaks) If you'll put layer of masking tape on it before you cut, it will hold both cut ends temporarily. I usually just tie a knot in the ends for my yaks, but I would think super glue or fray check would work.
    It'll be alright Friday!

    Hei,

Light Version: Burn it with a lighter or matches and give a twist with your fingers.

Medium Version: Pull the core out from the cover and cut it couple of millimeters shorter than the cover. Then burn it as above, by this you will be able to hide the core totally

Heavy Version: Sew a whipping to the end of each rope, but here you should burn the ends as with the Ligth Version to start with.

    I prefer tidy rope works!

    Best Regards

I usually finish of my shock cords with a loop at the end and I cinch it with a little copper ferrule that is used to crimp ground wires in electrical work. I also melt off the fray with a lighter.

Here's a link to the tarp tensioners I use. The cinch holds about 70lbs and eliminates about 6" of shock cord from a double overhand knot.

I melt the end slightly with a lighter and roll them in my fingers (ouch!) I do wet my hands before doing this so I'd be careful there. I read that dipping the ends into glue also works but I haven't tried that yet.

Fire works on most but like Simo said, whipping on the heavy stuff is a good way to go.

Marine grade electrical heat shrink tubing. Comes in lots of sizes and has a sticky adheasive inside. West Marine is a good source and I think Redden has it also. If you live on the coast check at any marine hardware store.
