    Hammock Length

I spent this weekend in my DIY hammock. Once I got the sag right, I had plenty of room, but I was curious about the length most people use.

I followed the instructions on Just Jeff's page (he in turn refers to Ed Speer), and ended up with a hammock 7.5' between the whipped ends (I'm 5' 6" tall). However, I've seen people refer to hammock and ridgeline lengths much longer than my below average would account for.

So, just another case of "go with what works for you"? Or is there something I'm missing?

It might be a case of YMMV, but I would encourage you to at least give a 10' or 11'-er a try. That extra length gives you so much more room to move around.

I just made one for the SO. She is 5'3", maybe 5'4", and I made her hammock 10' longas I patterned it loosely after a WB Traveler.

I figured if I bought her one, it would be that long anyway. And if she, for any reason, does like hangin', I'll have a back up.

My current work in progress hiking hammock started out as a 4 yd piece of fabric and settled in to a 11'4", was 11'6" before hemming. The width is 58" hemmed. I love this thing with one exception which will not matter on the trail. Nylon is not the most comfortable fabric sleeping au natural. I used temporary gathers with rubber bands and adjusted the length by a couple of inches a night until I found the right length. Until I finish this one and start on my new house hammock I have plenty of opportunity to experiment and get it right. Doing this allows you to get the feel of what the extra length does for your comfort. Something worth giving a try.

i say go with what works for you there is no "set" length when making a hammock ... if it works... it works
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I'm 6'. 11' is really comfortable. 10'6 is great, 10' is acceptable. Of course, this is measured as cut fabric, prior to hemming...

i'm 5'11" and i use a 9 foot long hammock and it's perfect (DIY Nano)...
like i said whatever work for you .... there is no set size
i will say 10 foot is a nice size for a hammock.... if you want to save weight 9 foot will do as well

I'm 6'2" and my current DIY gathered end started with 10'6" of raw material (before hemming). I'm very happy with it's comfort and it fits better under tarps than my previous one which was a foot longer. I'd guess that 9.5 to 10' of raw material would make a nice hammock for you.

The shortest hammock I've slept in was around 7 and a half feet. It was comfortable but my longer hammocks are even more comfortable. YMMV.
