Alabama - Old St. Stephens Park

Located right outside Leroy, Alabama, a few miles from my house. Pretty cool spot and hanger friendly.
Mosquitoes are really bad in the warmer months. I bet I lost a Liter of blood taking these pics.
They have lots of trails for horses, though I walk them just fine, and horse stables. There is also an archeaology
dig going on on the property where the old town of St. Stephens was located. This place is basically an old
abandoned limestone quarry. After it shut down many years ago, these lakes formed. The site is right atop a bluff
of the Tombigbee River. Camping on a pad with water and power is about $20. This place is no longer state funded.
If you have any questions, just ask.
Also on the property is a very nice boat launch into the Tombigbee River, and a swimming beach on the lakes.

Nice looking spot with some beautiful views considering it was an old quarry. Wonder if a hammocker planted that group of trees in the last pic? Looks like a perfect site for about 6 or 7 hammocks!
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

I agree and was wondering the same about the last picture. Have you hung on those trees?

Yes I just hung in those cedar trees a couple weeks ago when it was cool. They are actually attached to one of the pads. The staff there is very laid back and wont give you any problems. There is a sheriff's deputy that lives at the park in a camper just about full time.

The fishing was awesome before it became a public park. It was privately owned land to begin with, and you could sneak in and catch huge bass. Then it became a public park and got fished out. It's still open for fishing, it just gets alot of use. Best fishing is on the river, jugging catfish.
This place is in a really secluded area so if you go, make sure you call and get good directions. They have a website with phone numbers.

I've lived in Alabama my entire life and never heard of Old St. Stephens. I'm even a bit of a history buff! Now I must go and see the excavations. And hang, of course.

St. Stephens was the first capital of Alabama. The excavations going on are of the old town that once sat atop the hill beside the quarry. Not much to see though, nothing remains above ground.
