I've wanted to do that. I love climbing trees. I never use ropes with climbs under 20', I do the same thing when I go bouldering. I give you kudos for safety. I would probably stay a little lower without the ropes.

It's not heights I fear. It is the ground. Coming at me very fast. I'll stay closer to the ground so that if we meet, it is a somewhat less dramatic experience.

Question: In the first pic of Trip#2, your suspension biners - what type of rope are they clipped to? That's not the paracord, is it?

Yup it is paracord. It is actually 1 large loop of paracord made with a double fisherman's knot and then twisted so that it form's two loops and then I tied a figure 8 with the two loops for redundancy. I will be purchasing some actual climbing cord next time I visit my local store just for piece of mind.

I actually tried that once and it was a lot of fun. You are smarter than I was being that you're actually tied to the tree 100% of the time.

I hung mine from one solid branch and just hoped down for a hang. As you found out already, the hard part isn't getting the hammock up, but the tarp.

However, I used the branch I was hung from as kind of a ridgeline and put my tarp over it. Then just tied my guylines out to branches below.

Ya the second trip was extra tricky because it was basically a giant tree that was bent at 90 degrees so that I could stand on the parrallel part of the trunk which only gave me one branch and a neighboring tree to work with.

Wasn't there an "extreme hammock hanging" thread with a video of a guy doing this a few months ago?

I think knowing that people hammock mountainside makes hanging higher in a tree not as exciting for me

When you say "hanging mountainside" do you mean big wall climbers who sleep on portaledges? Those guys that are lucky enough to have the money and the mountains make me super jealous.

I agree man. i too am a long time boulderer and I have no worries about climbing 20 feet into a tree without ropes however I still tie in at 20 feet while sleeping because if I fell out of the hammock I wouldnt be able to react fast enough to absorb the impact like when bouldering. I dont want to fall on my head, break my neck, and be paralized forever .

The video didn't work for me but I am hoping it is just my ipad being stupid... Extreme hammocking? I will have to search this and see what the other guys are using for their setups when hammocking this high. Thanks.
