I have one and it is an amazing camera. AMAZING! I'm too scared to take it on overnights with me though, but if I went to Wind River, I may get over that fear.
Really looking forward to your trip dude.

Their actually a pretty tough camera that is well sealed, look at what the pro's put them through in some pretty extreme weather. I read a review a couple of years ago where they subjected some pro level Canon/Nikon DSLR, which the 5D certainly is, to some serious weather with no ill effects but I can certainly understand your concern... At the lofty price of an arm and two legs I'd never get it out of the house if it was slightly overcast....

I even bought mine in St. Thomas which was tax and duty free and it still was really expensive. But, I needed a good camera while on the ship and didn't want to miss all the photo opportunities.

I just have a problem of being a little careless with my stuff out in the woods and would kill myself if I broke it.
Man, you and you're friend are going to take some beautiful photos. I'm so jealous!

Wow! that looks like an amazing place.
    If you're gonna get a p&s I'd go with a canon (and I'm a nikon guy).
    Good luck,
