I've done lots of nights up on Mt. Hood.
A few questions:
1. Do you want to pack in?
2. Water.. hauling it in or do you need to be close to it?
3. "Facilities"? Poopin' in the woods good or no go?
4. Deep in the woods or close in?
5. White River area is a great place to go for close in with "facilites"... no water.. but plenty of trees and parking.

Crater Lake is pretty draconian with its rules. IIRC, the places where camping is allowed are a long walk from the crater.
As Gary_R, mentions, water isn't really an issue as long as there's snow on the ground and dead branches on the trees.
I prefer to skip the fire when camping alone, but I think having at least a small campfire is a good idea for a group affair. Luckily, there are very few (any?) places where this activity is prohibited during the wet season.
yeah - we had to have a fire for winter hangs back east. otherwise everyone
would be in their hammocks all day staying warm.
it's my first winter out here...but i think a campfire brings people together.
- water, well there's nothing like burnt water.
- as a group thing.. i always default to something car-camp based, esp. when you toss in elements that not everyone is familiar with. it makes it accessible to a wide range of people. don't get me wrong, i prefer backpacking in a few miles. but events like these seem to call for more face time, less miles.

I'm game for a couple small overnight hangs on Mt Hood.
I would like to do more exploring up there.
There might be some good spots down around 3 Sisters as well.
As I said before, the advantage of Mt. Hood is they plow the roads.
Which leaves us more options. And its pretty much guaranteed
to have snow. There is also a fair amount of places people can park and carpool in (4x4's).
Yes on the fire..
My pref is somewhere on Hood.. I think we can draw a larger crowd... but thats just me thinking.
If I can I will be there.
Depending on timing, I think I can make this, and I've got my tigoat box stove and modded superfly for a warming tent.
