Trip Report: Manitou Island Sept. 2011 (pic heavy)

    manitou sept 2011 001.jpg
Meeting up at the ferry. Bloomgorge heading off to the boat, he was happy because he got the last ticket. (thanks go out to pegleg56, who could not make the trip, and asked to make sure the ticket went to a good cause.)

    The crowd was gathering.

A FULLY LOADED boat leaves the port of Leland.

An hour and fifteen minutes later, we reached our destination.

    The pier at N. Manitou.

Unloading 75+ people and all the packs was a group effort. We formed a chain gang and handed off the gear and passed it down the line.

A relief map in the ranger station. The black lines are trails. We took the crooked trail to the far west side for camp #1 on Friday night. The island is complete wilderness, water was filtered from the lake. Most campers were found somewhere near the lakeshore. Even with the crowded boat, once on the trail you felt alone. Night #2 brought us back around to the East side.

A view of the East side beach. Night 2 found a seperated group of HF hangers (we got split up and just hung in smaller groups, as it ended up we were all within a half mile of each other)

    More Manitou 2011

Day 2 put us on the East side. The water was warm enough (very refreshing!) for a swim and clean up. The weather was absolutely perfect. Plenty of sunshine, cool temps for hiking, and NO BUGS. We had a few chilly 30* nights, which killed off most of the bugs.

East side meant breakfast on the beach. We woke early enough to do some quick packing, head down to the lake. Oms and Hasenpfeffer doing some cooking. We sat and waited for....

The sunrise!! I cant think of a better way to enjoy some coffee.

We gathered back at the ranger station to catch the boat on Sunday. Due to high winds, the boat was running behind schedule, so we ate and visited.

Back on the mainland, the HF crew did the group pic, then headed off on our way home.

Sweet report, it was fun. Shower was great along with a cold beverage. Work sucks, I guess I know how Jack felt with wanting to go back to the island. Doing the morning stonedholigan.

Great Report! Awesome trip! Great times, with great people! And work does suck. A fully LOADED boat, HA!
Its a proven fact that 78.4% of all statstics are made up on the spot.

2nd time actually worked out (for most of us). We had a few folks who neglected reserving a ticket and they got turned away after driving 5 hours from Detroit.

Definetely next time, TZ. The way you hike you could do laps around the island. Then meet up with everyone at night.

This is a place that holds a special spot in many folks hearts. I'll recommend it to all.
This was my first time to this island, I've been to S. Manitou. Both islands are excellent in my opinion.

That handsome guy in the foreground is Tom. He's the entertainment on the boat.
