Joining two blue wal Mart pads...

Should I glue or duct tape them?

I was thinking both but I wasn't sure what type of glue to use.

I did some experiments with this and finally used Liquid nails "Clear Seal.". I edge glued it and it was as strong as the foam itself.

When you folks make hammock pads out of these 3/8ish thick blue pads, how do you handle the large packspace required for packing them??

I made some Sgt. Rock 'wing pads' this way, but found they occupied far too much pack space to be very functional for my needs/wants.

    What do you guys do?

I cut one off at around 4 feet and criss crossed them. That gave me two ply under my torso with wide coverage of arms and shoulders. seems like feet and head didn't miss the double thickness.

I use a DIY gearskin type pack. the pads are coiled in it and form the frame.

Now that I think of it, the idea was ala Sgt Rock. Credit where credit is due.

I just cut my full length pad in half. One pad is turned sideways for shoulder coverage, and then overlapped for extra butt coverage. Works good.

With the pads separate, I can use one half rolled up inside my pack for extra structural support (turns the pack into a barrel). The other pad (or both) can be rolled up and lashed to the outside like is typically done.

I use a WW blue, cut in half and laid side by side overlapped to give a total width of about 30" and length 36" punch a couple of holes in the overlap section, lace with a bit of mason line so they don't separate when you wriggle. Roll at 20" width and use the length of mason to tie and attach to pack for trekking. Gluing or taping not good IMO because impossible to pack. I have a 36"x48" minicell for car camping.

I basically followed Sgt. Rock's Wing Pad design with 2 WM Blue Pads. The WM Blue Pad weighs around 12 ounces, so thats 24 ounces total. The Wing Pad portion of my experiement turn out 40" wide and 36" long. I have wide shoulders and am thinking that 48" would be ideal. Considering ordering a Minicell and then trimming it down for size.

Do you have a photo? Doesn't this result in a lumpy seam? I'm trying to get the dimensions right. How much of the head/body do the wings need to cover, and how wide should they be? How much of the body does the long pad need to cover? It seems like the wings need to start at the top of the head and extend about to the elbows. I'm not sure that leaves enough pad to cover the butt (or maybe it does) if that is all that's needed. FYI i have an Alps Mtn pad from ****'s that is pretty standard size.

You can duc tape them together and they hold forever,,even double face carpet tape if your putting them sandwiched together, and they hold forever,,try and get them apart and you will end up tearing one.
