    Grizz Beak

Who has 'em and are they worth it, or should I get doors sewn on my Maccat deluxe?

I have set and really like mine. I find that they do what they are supposed to do and if i don't need them I don't take them. If you plan on always using the beaks I would imagine that sewn on doors would be a lighter easier option. Figuring that the beaks use more fabric and require a few more tent stakes. Now as far as door's i don't have any experience with them but I figure that the beaks must be nearly as effective at blocking the elements. For me the beaks fit my needs a bit more as I only have one tarp that I want to stretch into all 4 seasons.

Here's where you can get them (Grizz beaks). http://www.2qzqhammockhanger.com/tarpaccessories.html

I don't have any, so I can't say much about them, but they looked cool when I've seen them.

I have a Warbonnet doorkit that stays permanently attached to my BMJ tarp. I feel the weight is really not too much of a concern to just have them there always. It's nice to have the option to batten down the hatches even in summer storms IMHO.

I'd like to eventually have a summer tarp and a winter tarp so as to not take any extraneous weight. The issue with that is I'd probably just end up going with a cuben 4 season - have the doors and lose the weight as well and can use summer or winter.

So to speak to your question directly, you can't really go wrong with either setup I feel. I'd go with permanently attached but if you go with beaks, you can keep them there always too but if you like, you can remove.

    YMMV

Tendertoe if I had the fund that would probably be the option I would go with as well. Seeing as I don't I find the beaks to be a workable solution.

Plus one on the Grizz Beaks from 2QZQ ... I have a set of two and I've used them on a rectangular tarp and even on a OGEE Tarp. They give you a lot of options and weigh almost nothing. I also have a Superfly with built in doors. Either version of doing things is great and has their merits. But if you already have a tarp without doors ... a dang great option to put doors on it. This system really worked for me on last October's Gorge Rat Gathering where we had 60 mph wind gusts one night ... they did their job with flying colors.

I've been thinking about this option simply because I can add two or just one (even leave them both home) depending on wind etc. Thanks for opening this thread...watching carefully.

I bought a set off someone here on the forum last year and think they are very nice. Sure, doors might be lighter, but I have a couple of tarp, and will likely make another tarp one day, and I can use these on whichever tarp I decide to take....or leave them behind if I want....options...I like that...

My 10' x 12' OES sil tarp can close and go all the way to the ground if it has too,,and works perfect,,and am waiting on the mail for a new green silnylon Wilderness Logics Oldman Winter,,so set for any kind of weather,,have a couple of diamonds for summer too. Doors pay for themselves in the long run and are worth a couple of oz's in my book.
