OES SpinnUL for a WBBB

Hi all,

I recently purchased a WBBB 1.1 DL and am looking for a good tarp.

I am shying away from silnylon because of the reported misting. Cuben seems awfully expensive so this has led me to SpinnUL. I've also homed in on OES as people seem to like their products, their prices are reasonable, they make hex tarps, and they use SpinnUL. However, I've heard about some QC issues with the SpinnUL suppliers so I emailed OES about that. We'll see what they have to say. Does anyone have any particular input about the SpinnUL Quality Control?

My primary question, however, relates to tarp size. I'm not sure what to get for my WBBB. I have 2 seperate use cases and I expect to (eventually) get 1 tarp for each. The 1st case is I hang solo like "normal." The 2nd use case is I have bunk bed style with my girlfriend.

I was, nominally, thinking the Standard for solo & Ultra for double hammock bunk bed style.

Any thoughts from you pros out there?

Good luck with the Spinn. Last I heard from Brian, there was no good news to report. I think the Jacks (Jacks R Better) have some hex tarps in Spinn. They are sized inbetween the OES Standard and Deluxe. I assume the Spinn they have is of good quality, but have not used it.

As for size, the Standard is an excellent choice for a lightweight solo hiker. One of my favorite tarps for warm weather. I've not used an Ultra, but I'm sure it's big enough to cover two well placed hammocks. Bunkbed style is dangerous, BTW. Careful what you guys eat.

I think that's a mistake.

Silnylon has been used perfectly fine for years by thousands of hangers and ground campers alike without issue. Misting has only ever been confirmed in second-run silnylon, and some highly-worn examples. Bear in mind that some of the reports are also of rain knocking condensation free from the underside of the tarp. First-run material (like you'd get from OES or many other reputable makers) won't present a misting issue at all.

That's not to say that Cuben and Spinn aren't fine choices, because they certainly are...but Silnylon should not be overlooked based on false reporting.

I'm waiting to hear back from Brian @ OES about the SpinnUL material. We'll see what he has to say and perhaps I'll reopen the book on silnylon.

I staye plenty dry under a Sil tarp. I have one of JRB's spinn tarps and it is a really nice size, especially for the BB which I think need a little more length in keep the foot box dry.

I think your size ideas are fine. The standard is good for solo and the ultra would give more protection for two should you get stuck in a storm.
I tend to agree with angrysparrow about the sil. I've not had any "misting". I have gotten the occasional drop of mist but only when in porch mode on the porch side and I attribute that to the water coming in horizontally under the porch. JMO.

I have spent some very rainy nights under my sil tarp and been plenty dry, I would not give up on sil just yet.

I wonder if some of the reports of misting isn't condensation on the inside and then it rains down from the the drumming of rain on the top.

I have experienced this with my Spinn tarp as well when the dew point was extremely high (causing a lot of condensation on the inside of the tarp [I must be a heavy breather]). Sil is no different (any material - for that matter - would be prone to this happening). Nothing to be too concerned about though IMHO.

Install a car defogger on the underside of the tarp and you will have no issues

Well, I'm glad to hear so many people like their silnylon. This is my 1st tarp and the silnylon opens the door for to cheaper options.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Brian at OES. If the SpinnUL material is good it IS a lot lighter without being quite as pricey as the cuban.
